Many businesses and events are still not open due to the Coronavirus pandemic so you may be looking for something to do to get out of the house and occupy your time. Texas’ State Parks are currently open with some modifications so you can plan a day trip or overnight trip to one of the nearby parks for something fun to do.
Different parks offer different options for things to do so take a look at their website before you plan your visit so you know what they offer and if everything is currently available. Here are a few options that are just a short drive that you might want to check out.
Brazos Bend State Park offers a nature trail, hiking and biking trails, horseback riding (bring your own horse), fishing, campsites, a nature center and observatory.
Galveston Park offers swimming, fishing, bird watching, hiking and biking, paddling trails and campsites. This park offers beach and bay sides so there are many options for things to do.
Lake Somerville State Park and Trailway offers fishing, boating, paddling, swimming, trails and camping. The park offers canoes and kayaks for rent to use on the water.
Sheldon Lake State Park and Environmental Learning Center offers a nature trail that passes 28 naturalized ponds and catch and release fishing. An observation tower also provides wonderful views of the surrounding wetlands and the lake.
Stephen F. Austin State Park offers hiking and biking trails and campsites.
Village Creek State Park offers camping, picnicking, fishing, hiking, mountain biking, swimming and geocaching within the park for your enjoyment.
Currently, all of these parks are open but you should double check before you plan a trip. Make sure to take masks with you as they may be required if you are using public areas of the parks like restrooms. All parks are encouraging social distancing. Crowds vary but weekends are usually more crowded so you may want to plan a weekday trip if that is an option.
